Maryland Paid Family & Medical Leave: Do You Qualify?
Maryland has passed its paid family and medical leave program, FAMLI, but it isn't paying benefits yet. After several delays, the timeline now points to 2028.

What's coming, and when
Payroll contributions are set to start in January 2027, with benefits first available on January 3, 2028. Once it's live, FAMLI is designed to provide up to 12 weeks of paid leave for family or medical reasons, with the possibility of up to 24 weeks combined for someone who has both a serious health condition and a new child to bond with in the same year.
Until then, your protected-leave options in Maryland run through federal FMLA and existing state law. It's worth checking your federal eligibility now rather than waiting on the state program.
